James Young is SEC Freshman of the Week

Freshman James Young became the second Kentucky basketball player to haul in a Southeastern Conference weekly award for the 2013-14 season when he was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week on Monday. The honor is the first of his career.

Young led the Wildcats with 26 points in a 105-76 win over UT Arlington last week. En route to the 26 points, Young knocked down five 3-pointers and made eight of his 14 (.571) field goal attempts. Young also dished out a career-high three assists and had two rebounds and two steals.

The first-year player from Rochester Hills, Mich., has connected on at least one 3-pointer in all five contests for UK this season and leads the team with 12 on the year. He has reached double-figure scoring in each of Kentucky’s last three outings.

Kentucky’s 105 points marked a season high and is the second-most scored in the five-year tenure of coach John Calipari.

Young is the second Wildcat this season to earn a weekly award. Classmate Julius Randle was tabbed the league’s Player of the Week following the opening week of the season.
