Some Quotes From Coach Cal's Radio Show Earlier This Evening

Tonight was John Calipari's weekly radio show, a show where fans call in and ask the coach questions about the team. I have to admit, Cal sounded more positive than he has in the last few months. He seemed more confident after the Cats' performances in the SEC Tournament.  Here's some quotes from tonights show...

On the improved guard play during the SEC Tournament...
"I'm proud of our guard play. Everyone said it was a weak spot. Now it's a strength"

On what it's been like for him this season...
"I just try to stay focused on these kids. It's not about my pride or ego, it's about them."

His thoughts on how his team performed against Florida in the SEC Championship game...
"This team deserved to win (SEC Title) They worked, they prepared. I was proud of the way they played."

His thoughts on Alex Poythress...
"Alex is harder on himself than anybody else. Gotta get over that. Gotta get him more confident on offense."

Cal's thoughts on the play of Julius Randle against Florida this past Sunday...
"Randle wasn't very good yesterday, but they're not machines, they're kids. We had a good meeting about it today and he felt the loss was because of how he played. I felt bad for him. He'll be fine and I expect he'll play great."

On playing Kansas State in the first round of NCAA Tournament...
"Kansas State is just like Florida, they're not gonna give you the game, you gotta go play for it. They're gonna be physical so you gotta go be physical as well."

His thoughts on playing more zone defense...
"Zone is gonna come into play in the tournament, We've worked really hard on it, we can't be afraid to play it. I told the team, if we play zone you have got to be more active and watch the passes. We'll play it, but it won't be a steady diet of zone."

Cal's thoughts on the improved play of Andrew Harrison during SEC Tournament...
"Last game we shot 35%, but Andrew had 21 attempted assists. He can't pass it to you and make the basket too. You don't have to make them all, but you can't miss them all either."

Cal's thoughts on the final play versus Florida...
If I had it to do over again, I should've never called that timeout."

Cal on late game run against Florida...
"There was a point during the game where I told Andrew, don't call one play, just keep getting us shots. We had them on their heels and we just kept coming. They were tired."

Cal had to leave the radio show a segment early because of a team dinner he was hosting at his house. He gave the team today off and had them get messages. They will begin preparing for the NCAA Tournament starting tomorrow. Before Cal left, he had this closing message...

"This team has what it takes, we got more length we just gotta have more fun and play. I tell them, let's just go do something crazy, let's go play, let's go have fun. Also, I gotta say, I love our fans, they're amazing, they're just great. Good night folks..."
