It's not everyday that I agree with anything that Billy Donovan has to say, but I'm going to make an exception just this once.
While most people want the NBA age limit raised to twenty which would require players to be two years removed from their graduating class, Donovan has a different opinion. He wants the age limit dropped all together allowing players to enter the NBA Draft straight out of high school and I for one agree with his reasoning.
In a column posted on CBSsports.com , Donovan says that colleges take to big of a risk taking players (He uses Julius Randle and Jabari Parker as examples here, not sure why he picked those two in particular) who would otherwise rather be in the NBA instead of spending one year at the collegiate level. The risk being that if the said player takes any kind of impermissible benefits, it's the school that would suffer the greatest consequence not the player who will be gone at the end of the season.
Here's a sample of Donovan's interview from the column...
"It's colleges that have to handle situations like this and what comes with it, And what comes with it is a lot of enticement, a lot of agent involvement, a lot of people hovering around and a lot of people trying to get their hooks into the kid. And then if the kid makes a mistake or doesn't do the right thing, all of the sudden it falls on the institution. That's not right when the kid should have never been in college in the first place and should already have been in the NBA."
You really should head over to CBSsport.com and give this a read. Even though it's not a very long column, it's something that makes a whole lot of sense.
