We apologize for the delay on this post, but night shift makes things a little difficult to say the least. Anyways, here we go…
Kentucky loses to Baylor and drops from #3 to #11 in the new AP poll and deservedly so. So far this season, every time the Cats has faced a ranked opponent (which is twice) they have looked less than impressive. In fact, they looked more confused, lost and scared more than anything else. This just goes to show that Kentucky was overrated to start the season as most teams are this early, see what was #6 Kansas and unranked Colorado this past weekend.
I'm not big into the argument that "this is just a young team" simply because Cal has proven with Anthony Davis and MKG that talent and youth can beat experience. Or is the article that Kentucky Sports Radio's Andrew Cassady wrote entitled "Did Anthony Davis and MKG Ruin Our Freshman Perception" true. Did Davis and MKG give Kentucky fans the wrong perception about what a freshman is capable of? Only time will tell and with this group, who knows when that time will come. One thing is for sure, for the sake of their chances and the fans' hopes of winning a National Championship, that time had better be sometime soon.
Up next for the Cats is Boise State. Now I know what you're thinking, "it's just Boise State", but I'm telling you, the boys had better come ready to play unless they want to suffer another loss in their young season. Here's Boise State at a glance…..
Boise State University:
EST: 1932 became known as Boise State University in 1974.. More on that later
ENROLLMENT: 22,678
LOCATION: Boise, Idaho
FORMER NAMES: Boise State College (1969-1974), Boise College (1965-69) Boise Junior College (1932-65)
COLORS: Orange/Dark Blue
CONFERENCE: Mountain West
NICKNAME: Broncos
MASCOT: Buster Bronco
In their history, Boise State has been to the NCAA Tournament a total of six time (1976, 1988, 1993, 1994, 2008 and 2013) with a record of 0-6 all-time.
So far this season, the Broncos are undefeated with a record of 8-0 with their last win coming against Carroll Montana by a score of 80-52. Boise ranks 1st in the country in PPG with an average of 92ppg through their first eight games.
Here's a look at how the Cats will stack up against the Broncos Tuesday night….
BY THE NUMBERS:
BSU UK
PPG: 92 82
RPG: 40 44
APG: 13 14
SPG: 9 4
BPG: 2 8
TPG: 10 13
FG%: 50 47
FT%: 75 67
3P%: 40 33
We have all come to the understanding that perimeter defenses is not this years edition of the Cats' forte so to speak, but they better learn in a hurry, at least before Tuesday night. The Broncos, as you can see shoot the three ball at a 40% clip as a team, but there's one guy they will need to pay CLOSE ATTENTION to… Jeff Elorriaga. This kid shoots a RIDICULOUS 64% from three and we all know how players like Jeff Elorriaga shoot it inside Rupp, especially against the Cats. Elorriaga's 64% is not joke, on the season Jeff has attempted 41 threes and has connected on 26 of them so this will be someone the Cats will have to pay attention in addition to the several players the Broncos have that shoot the three in the 40% range and that's SEVERAL.
SERIES HISTORY:
There is no history between the Cats and the Broncos as Tuesday night will be their first ever match-up.
As we have seen so far this season, there are several things this Kentucky team needs to work on for them to have a chance at a National Championship. The good news is we have John Calipari as head coach and he has proven time and time again that he is capable of some pretty impressive things given the time. The big question is, with all the preseason hype will we have the PATIENCE to give him the amount of time he needs to make this team into the title contender we know that it is?
