Saturday, this time in Rupp Arena, Kentucky 16-6 (7-2) will once again take on the Tigers of Auburn. When these two SEC foes locked horns back in January, Kentucky won going away 75-53 sparking discussions on whether or not that was the Cats' "break out game". Here it is early February and Big Blue fans are still waiting on the "break out" we thought took place a month ago.
Don't get me wrong, Kentucky has improved drastically the last couple of weeks, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The Boy's in Blue come into this one ridding a four game winning streak and are looking to keep it going.
Auburn on the other hand has been spiraling out of control since losing to Kentucky in the previous match up dropping four straight, but found themselves long enough to knock off Alabama this past Wednesday 49-37.
Here's a number's comparison between the two teams...
Auburn Kentucky
PPG: 67 76
RPG: 35 39
APG: 13 15
SPG: 8 7
BPG: 4 8
TPG: 14 13
FG%: 41 49
FT%: 69 64
3P%: 33 36
Kentucky vs. Auburn History:
Kentucky and Auburn have been playing since January 1921 with Kentucky winning the first match up 40-25 and have dominated the series ever since. Over their 92 year history against each other, Kentucky owns a record of 87-17 with the Cats winning the last 14 match ups. Kentucky's last loss at the hands of the Tigers came on January 11, 2000 63-66 at Auburn.
(all history information came from Big Blue History)
Looking at stats alone, Kentucky wins this one in much the same fashion as the last meeting. But, you can never tell which Kentucky team will show up from game to game. If it's the same team that had their best defensive effort of the year holding Auburn to 0-15 from three and 38% from the floor, I'd say Cats by 20. On the other hand, if it's the team that fans hope they have seen the last of things could get interesting.
Win or lose, we will find out Saturday at 4 p.m. if this Kentucky team can extend their winning streak to five and gain some momentum before they travel to Florida.
