Wednesday night at Spring Valley High School in Huntington, WV Alice Lloyd had the daunting task of taking on the Express of Huntington Prep. The night started with a little disappointment for Prep fans as the player they came to see, Andrew Wiggins would not play due to flu-like symptoms. This game however, would be the return of Baylor bound big man Dominic Woodson.
The disappointment didn't last long once the show got started. Florida State bound Xavier Rathan-Mayes got it started with a four-point play and never looked back on his way to a near triple double with 21pts, 8rebs, 9ast and 5 stls to lead Huntington to a 85-41 victory of Alice Lloyd. All the talk always seem to revolve around Wiggins and rightfully so, but Rathan-Mayes deserves some praise himself. This kid is an amazing ball handler, can slash to the basket with ease and has a knack for finding open teammates at just the right time. Florida State is getting one hell of a player in Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
Alice Lloyd tried everything it could to stop the attack of Huntington Prep, but as many teams have found out, that's nearly impossible to do. One of the main reasons most teams have such a hard time against Prep is because the spectacular play of their insanely talented front court. Dominic Woodson and Moses Kingsley were two of the reasons that Alice Lloyd could only manage 15 points in three quarters. Everytime someone was able to get to the basket, which wasn't often, Woodson and Kingsley were there to change their minds. What shots the two big men didn't block, they altered, never allowing an open look at the basket. It's no wonder Woodson signed with Baylor when you see him play. Standing at 6'10 and 290lbs, this kid can get up and down the floor as good as any big man I've seen comparable to his size, he will make an immediate impact on the next level no question. After missing a week, also due to the flu, Woodson showed little signs of rust on his way to 16pts and 10rebs while Moses Kingsley finished with 14pts and 10rebs.
This was my second time watching Prep in action, and each time it just gets better. If you haven't seen these kids play you've got some chances coming up soon. First, this Saturday they will travel to Hampton, VA to take on Cape Henry (VA.) in the MLK Roundball Classic. You can catch this game live on ESPN Saturday at 4pm est.
Then, February 1st, 2nd and 3rd Huntington Prep will be playing in the Tri State Classic at Spring Valley High School in Huntington, WV. Now that you know when and where to watch, it's your own fault if you don't take advantage of this opportunity. So do yourself a favor, go out and watch some of the best high school players in the country, you will not be disappointed.
